Essential entomology
I once read a publication, written by an old and slightly bitter entomologist. The preface simply read: Science is just the tedious re-discovery of what nature presents to us as obvious.
In other news… From today you can buy ‘Ted Bitey‘ T-shirts at a reasonable price from The Flowfield Unity’s Cafepress shop:
Feel free to let me know if there are any other Flowfield designs you’d like to see.

HOOO! That’s awesome because I had some great sales during the holidays and have some ‘cafe cash’ clearing soon. As soon as its spendable i’m treating myself to a bitey tee.
Ted is definitely a good choice for a new T.
I think all butterflies are better suited for the theatre.
What happened to the Babbage Indifference Engine t-shirt? I was hoping to pick one of those up… of course Ted Bitey would also be a nice shirt.
I didn’t think anyone wanted one (indifference engine t-shirt) , so I dropped it… however since you asked, I’ll put it back up again this weekend… and now I can add a ‘back by popular demand’ sticker on it. I’ll send you a mail to let you know.
Hi. I’m Lilla. The quote about science made my day.
I think that t-shirt just needs to be connected with the right audience. All you need to do is find a large number of people who are familiar with the history of computing and have good senses of humor.
Hi Lilla,
It’s always noice to have a neuroscientist drop by for a visit… especially one that likes gore films and B-movies - the inspiration for about 20% of my comics. The science quote is real, though I can no longer remeber which book it was in… I think it is a special quality of entomologists that as they get older they really start to get grumpy.
And Mr Hewitt,
I know, you’re right. I’m going to spend some time trying to push the T-shirts towards people that might actually like them… now, where to I find a colony of geeks..?
Is the butterfly supposed to be the precocious child? You do know that caterpillers are the children of butterflies, right?
I’m confused on this one. Nicely drawn, though…
Hi Ted,
I just checked your comic out… I really like what you’re doing.
As for the precocious child thing, I can see where the confusion is. The problem is that the definition of precocious varies between children and insects; a precocious insect is one that matures without going through all of its larval stages - hence the butterfly and not the caterpillar. I know, a bad pun, but it’s what I do.
if nothing else on this site existed, i think i might just read it for the names people have in the comment place/area/thing-palloo.
The Flowfield Unity does seem to attract some very special names. Your’s is pretty odd too, though I think some of these names are actually real-world names too.
I know, and that is why it is just such a lovely thing. Fiction is like candy, tasty but just not substantial enough.
It asked for a name. It didn’t ask for mine. So it’s not my name. It just a name, which is a lil odd.
If the little box wanted my name, it could’ve said please, and mebe even thank you, instead of just telling me that it was something I had to give it. Very rude.
What happened to the t-shirts?
