Turning tricks for entertainment
Obviously, this strip owes a lot to the film, The Prestige, however, regular readers may also like to know the manufacturer of my current toaster.

What a remarkable feat of prestige-digitation.
FINALLY! A magic trick I can do!
Actually I know a couple of good magic tricks, I just suck at sleight of hand. ‘Tis the saddest of my shortcomings.
I’m intrigued, what sort of tricks?
I can make a dollar float. It’s fairly convincing if done correctly.
“It’s fairly convincing if done correctly.”
Isn’t that true of all magic tricks? Or should it be “It’s not very convincing if done incorrectly”?
I think what I mean is that it’s done exactly the way you think it is but if done correctly you’ll never guess that the trick is so simple.
Sorry Joe, my last comment came across a bit harsh there…
The best tricks in my opinion are the ones where you *sort of* know how it is done, but are still amazed. It’s why I like Penn and Teller’s cup and ball routine:

Genius, right? They even tell you how they are doing whilst using see-through cups. But still, a great trick.
Such a dignified toaster never known!
A wonderful illustration of the saying: ‘Any technology that is sufficiently advanced is indistinguishable from magic.’
As great as the comic was, the reason I’m commenting is the toaster.
That is the prettiest toaster in the history of toasters!!!!
It is rather good… I mean aside from being pretty. It even has a bagel setting.
A bagel setting!!! All my morning troubles would be solved if I had that toaster I think.
Wonderful - I saw that film too!
I watched the Prestige this week.
Very dark movie, very well made.
Confusing tho, non-linear story line.
I think the major secret for the good guy is that he had a identical twin, but I am still trying to figure out what was with Tesla’s device.
I think they were playing with the mythology of Tesla (his nickname is ‘The Wizard’).
He was famed for his jaw-dropping demonstrations and his showmanship eventually helped persuade the world that his AC system was far superior to the conventional DC system…
However, because of all of this he has been linked to some rather intriguing mysteries, including a supposed death ray that he designed (reportedly held by the FBI) to some spectacular explosions in Siberia.
I think the film was trying to show the distinction of magic and technology by having technology provide the real magic in the film…
That and the fact that if you want to perform a good trick it has to be a lifestyle choice.
