Dr Sagan’s universal apple pie recipe
Actually, the more astute of you will know this to be a mis-quoting of Dr Sagan… what he actually said was:
If you want to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.
I was a long way from home, and the internet, when I drew this and so had to rely on my rather shaky memory. Still, I think I got the gist across.
If you don’t know who Carl Sagan is, I suggest you look here, and at the Carl Sagan Portal.
He also happens to be another human that I classify as one of my heroes, for obvious reasons.
There are so many great quotes attributed to him too. The best list can be found here.
Carl Sagan – He’s not wrong.

Yeah, creating a universe would be the first and hardest step of making an apple pie from scratch. Can’t say I’ve ever done it, but I think I would have to change my name to God if I did. I like my name as it is so I think I will save my energy.
He’s mine too.
I find the universe-creating to be the easiest part, but then I’m not much of a cook.
Yeah, I read in a textbook somewhere that most deities fail home ec.
According to an edition of Scientific America, creating a universe is with in grasp of humanity now.
Tho what we would do with it is another matter.
explain to me how it is within the grasp of humanity? or link, perhaps. its that kind of statement that frightens me a little, and makes me think humans are a little bit up themselves occaisionally.
Well it is within the grasp of the scientific american atleast.
The theory sounded dubios at best.
Also, the method used to create this new universe means that we can’t actually do anything with it, cos once it is made, it ceases to exist here.
So yeah I think it is all abit of a wank really. You are right about a=us being up ourselves.
wow, i guess you cant do anything with it because of course if you create a new universe, it wont be inside this universe…ok, so sometimes i think about universe creation and stuff. its interesting, but people think im weird for it.
but i ask, why arent we putting all this effort into creating something useful, instead of pretending we’re almighty?
Well in theory this micro universe would contain alot of energy….
I dunno, this type of science has many practical applications.
Take for nuclear physics. It may have seemed abit far fetched 100yrs agao and very impractical, but now we are almost able to make clean energy outta sea water.
to me it seems like this argument depends on how you define/interpret the word ‘universe’, but i am currently doing irrelevant schoolwork and dont want to concentrate on anything other than what i have to know for said irrelevant subject.
Yeah it does depend on how you define “universe”, but these guys were pro’s, so I’m going to assume they were using it in the right context.
I think maybe they don’t use the word universe to mean one verse, but simply as a familair word. Suppose they could just say verse.
What is the irrelevant schoolwork?
