Opportunity knocked
A bit of a British strip this week.
First off, ‘Draught’, or in the US ‘draft’.
Then there’s the title, ‘Opportunity Knocked’, which refers to the talent show of yesteryear, ‘Opportunity Knocks‘.
And finally, the reason for this comic is that last night, the new series of talentless show ‘X Factor’ started.
Ther’s a ton of reasons why I dislike the programme, but the one that really gets me is how the phrase ‘I want it so bad’ has replaced people’s ability to go and learn and practice.
Even then, I doubt that even winning the thing will help. Most previous winners have had somewhat patchy results and certainly haven’t troubled the charts too much.
Oh, and that’s another one… As usualy we expect the winner to release a christmas single. In the UK the chritmas number one is a tradition that I gather doesn’t exist elsewhere, especially the US.

so you really have a christmas number one over there, like on love actually? man, that UK is a magical land. a magical kingdom, one might say.
We do indeed, though it’s a bit like Christamas itself in that no-one can remember really why we are celebrating it, just that we do.
Unlike Bill Nighy Day, which everyone commemorates for the right reasons.
i love you bill nighy!
I wish they would just close the doors on the whole reality tv thing and then gas the joint.
In the end, it’s all the same.
Opportunity doesn’t knock,
And bullets don’t kill people.
In my experience opportunity doesn’t knock. Opportunity has to be chased down and pummeled into submission. I’m not really even sure what opportunity has to do with being a pop star… How long has it been since the ability to learn and practice had been any part of that equation? The sooner we start looking at pop stars as industrial products, like computer chips or tampons*, the better we’ll all feel.
*ten points to anyone who catches the reference.
I agree totally with that, and I guess that’s what I was getting at, that people’s ‘get up and go’ and got up and gone.
The music industry is in a terrible state at the moment, since it can’t help but suffocate talent amongst the torrent of generic rubbish it churns out. It’s not doing itself any favours at all.
I’m afraid I don’t get the tampon reference… though I was amazed to find out that in the UK, all sanitary products of that ilk are still considered luxury items and therefore taxed as such, but I don’t think that’s it.
I’m an optomist - I do think that when one door closes another one usually opens. In my experience oppertunity does knock but you need to be in the right place at the right time. Hard work and committment are also two other parts of ‘opportunity’ - you can’t wait for opportunity to knock you need to proactive.
The US is far too P. Correct to do something as *crass* as a Christmas Number One.
/biting sarcasm
Political Correctness amuses me in that bitter sort of way that means I really need to go write some fanfiction for a while to cheer up.
If a door closes and another one doesn’t open then climb through the window.
