Yeah, definitely a fan. Have you heard Sigur Ros’s earlier album Von? That’s the one that converted me: an amazing soundscape experiment, combining the best things about noise music, ambient music, rock’n'roll, and that unique Iceland touch that all bands from Iceland have.

Oh, the pretenders around these parts aren’t nearly so sophisticated. It’s: ‘yeah, you know Tupac, Fiddy Cent, that stuff.’ What they really listen to is Justin Timberlake.

huh, i find that around here i tend to get the people who dont quite know what theyre talking about but they know enough to sound knowledgable. the people who kind of go, ‘yeah you know, mogwai, sigur ros, that stuff.’ are you a fan then? those two dont really do it for me, but i can see the appeal for sure.

Actually, I’ve found that over here, people tend to know of one or the other, but not both. The crazy audiophiles know Sigur Ros, and the indie kids know Mogwai. I put them together because, come on, they ought to go together. Usually I put the Opeth album Damnation in between the two, however. Breaks it up a little, while still keeping it mellow.

have you ever found that sigur ros and mogwai always go together? i rarely hear one mentioned without the other!

Yeah, I know, I’ve seen the new Grinch and think it’s a travesty. The Chuck Jones cartoon version though comes on every year (usually about fifty times on cable) and it was on the other day and I missed it. I really don’t know if they’ll be playing it again on broadcast television this year.

The “new” Grinch was not really worth watching. Go for the old animated one.

Also, I feel you on the Capitalism front. A couple years ago I switched to celebrating the Solstice instead. We do a large gathering of friends in the huge family kitchen and have a potluck. any gifts exchanged tend to be hand made. We listen to Sigur Ros and Mogwai. It’s nice.

I am SO anti-Christmas. Partly it’s the capitalism, partly it’s the nonsensical origins behind it, but mostly it’s because I watch a lot of TV and Christmas specials are pretty annoying (not to mention how much I hate Christmas music and actually I really hate giving and receiving gifts because no one ever gets me anything even close to something I’d like).

I actually started talking about Christmas sometime last month because last year I did an anti-Christmas special for one of my comics and this year I’m doing a sequel to it that I’m really excited about (It ends with “MERRY CHRISTMAS” written in blood.)

Though I missed the Grinch when it came on the other night and I don’t have cable right now so I may not be able to see it again this year. I freaking WORSHIP Dr. Seuss.

I don’t watch tv or wander about shopping for Christmas gifts. It snuck up on me this year. I was literally sitting in starbucks wondering why Christmas music was playing before I smacked my forehead and realised it was after Thanksgiving.

Christmas gives me something to sing whenever. Huge songbook I’m not allowed to use any other time of the year, which is awesome. Holly and the Ivy, Heatmiser, Mr. Grinch, Sleigh Ride…

I just have to remember to avoid Disneyland like the PLAGUE. Gah. So crowded…I had a panic attack, years past, because we trooped off to the cast party at Disneyland during the Yuletide season.

Try to listen to “Sandbox” by Too Much Joy if you get the chance. It’s my favorite Christmas song, edging out “Santa’s Gonna Kick Your Ass” by the Arrogant Worms by a short margin. When I was younger my favorite Christmas song was “Something’s Stuck up in the Chimney”.

Over here the department stores are just now putting up their Christmas decorations, and most stores won’t be putting up anything at all.
