Unbalanced

I apologise for the absent strip on Friday. Think of it as a moment of silence as a mark of respect for a friend of mine who’s untimely death shows just how rock and roll he was.

Apart from playing with some excellent bands, Keith is described as being a folk-metal pioneer (seriously, folk-metal).

I wish I could have been a folk-metal pioneer, but alas that ship sailed whilst I was still a boy.

I wonder what is left to pioneer?

    African Techno-Country-Soul-Grunge-Booty Bass?

As for the comic, my head is similarly disproportionate and I can attest to the neck problem.

The cat with the big giant head?

    H’m, as for pioneering…other dimensions!

I feel like a lot of the exciting fields have already been pioneered. You really have to get creative now if you want to start something new.

And broken necks are really depressing. Poor Arabella. :(

Yes but what’s so bad about not being a pioneer? I like refining existing things, like steampunk or folk. There’s always something new to explore, some new facet of everything, a new interpretation.

True. But all the same, “folk-metal pioneer” does have a bit more ring to it than “folk-metal reinterpreter.” Really, though, sometimes I really do my best to add my own spin to things that have already been done, and then just end up looking wholly unoriginal, despite my efforts.

Gotta agree with that. What is so great about being a pioneer?
I looked into steam punk. hmmmm, not my thing exactly, but only on an aesethic basis.
Pioneer?, I’d just prefer to be good at what I do, and enjoy it.

Indeed! Enjoying is much more fun than fretting over being the first.

Shortly after I was born the doctors thought I had hydrocephalus, but it turns out I just had a big head.

What is left to pioneer, indeed.

My friend met a boy who said he was into making experimental music. Shortly after they met, she made a trip to Costa Rica with her family, and bought him a pair of maracas on an impulse.

Turns out he was talking about that whole John Cage avant-garde borderline kind of thing.

But he thought it was so cute that she had thought of him.

They’ve been married for a few years now. They’re planning a family. I’ll take that kind of pioneering if that’s all there is.

Adam, I’m sorry to hear about Keith’s passing. Folk-metal is actually one of my favorite genres of music: Skyclad is right up there on the list of bands I listen to regularly. Something beautiful has passed out of the world.

I never made the connection that you and them were from the same small-ish town in the same country. Lancaster… I’ve a friend from Lancaster, PA: that’s close, right?

To see what they’ve inspired: http://www.myspace.com/nekrogoblikon

I mean, Skyclad was so influential — look what’s come of it. Acts like Finntroll, Mago de Oz, Cruachan. I will listen to folk-metal all day, in respect and memory.

Indeed, our little town in the north has quite a metal heritage…

…which Keith was obviously a massive part of.

We’ve also provided a home to a member from The Stone Roses, and the bloke who played C3PO in all of the Star wars movies.

By my reckoning, Lancaster PA is only several thousand miles away, so fairly close… they tend to get all the credit whilst we do all the work.

The name Lancaster, means ‘Castle on the Lune’, which is the river that runs right through the town… the Lune itself is so called because of its crescent shape. Any other ‘Lancaster’ is just a pale imitation.

I’m sure he’d be chuffed to know that you’ve dedicated a day to some decent music, thanks.

As far as what’s left I’m trying to pioneer folk-trance. And maybe a little bit of break-folk.
