The Jung one
If there’s one thing that humans are partial to, it’s a nice bit of control…
The British press is still obsessed by ‘out of control’ youths, a phenomenon, as far as I’m concerned, that has persisted for several hundred years at least. Still, it highlights my point – out of whose control exactly are these youths?
The parents? The Church? The police? The teachers? The government? The media?
All of them.
You see, everyone likes a nice bit of control, and who better to control than the young? Our institutions have been so keen to create them and then gobble them up that they’ve forgotten to let them have any control of their own.
But remember, you can only hold on to control for so long. The media for example – after all they started me on this particular rant – not exactly a spotless record. Even the wonderful thing that is the BBC loses grip sometimes. Take John Sweeney –

It’s good to lose control, especially when you’re handing some over to someone that has none.

i have never seen a headphones sign that looks like that. is it because i’m american?
in my city, it’s become part of a fad to threaten your parents, particularly in front of your friends. I’m not sure how long that’s been going on, or where else it happens, but if you hate your parents and want to stick it to them just say “Shut up or i’ll burn down your house.”
I’ve never been one for total control, being friends with way too many anarchists, but that’s just crazy violent.
Well that’s ridiculous. Burning houses down? Wacky kids these days! (I wonder if I’ll ever feel old enough to say that non-ironically?)
Anarchists are fun. I took my older brother to Food Not Bombs, an anarchist organization (*giggle*) that feeds the homeless with donated and dumpstered food, pointing to the excessive waste in American culture, not too long ago. The gutter-punk anarchists have a sort of un-spoken faith in anarchism, being mostly rough street-type kids. They are anarchists because they see the system not working, and conclude that all systems are as bad. No one really talks about it, it’s just sort of there. Now my older brother got his bachelor’s degree from a ridiculously good school, in philosophy and computer science, and is has anarchist leanings from a socio-philosophical perspective. So when he found out that all these crazy punk rockers were anarchists, he was overjoyed, and asks, “so, what’s your vision of anarchy?” meaning, literally what he said. But these kids are so defensive about it, everyone just glared at him, thinking he was making fun of them, or wanting to argue against anarchy. Poor over educated brother.
I agree. I think the main problem with parents is this obsession with treating your kids as though they are untrustworthy (and that lame excuse of, ‘I trust you, I just don’t trust everyone else’ is just that). In my experience, if you treat someone as though they can’t be trusted, they get tired of trying to prove you wrong and vice versa.
I plan to have a son someday, and I have definitely learned from the mistakes made by my parents and the parents of my friends.
Funny how we learn so many negatives from our parents, isn’t it? I don’t think I’ll have kids, for fear of being as bad of a parent as my parents were. Talk about control problems… *shudder*
Nah, I want a son, myself. Though I wo’n't know what to do if he likes girls. ^^;;
I like being in control. But I hate self-control.
That’s a recipe for disaster.
I realised today, that if I ever lost control of myself because of all the little problems i have hidden inside me, the only person i would be hurting would be me. And I don’t know if that’s a good thing, because it means I won’t hurt anyone…or if it’s a bad thing, because I have no deterrant to make me stay in control.
But I’m talking about emotional control, which is pretty much off the subject of the strip entirely.
We kids ain’t out of control, dagnammit.
In our current affair programs at present, a large proportion of time is taken up with pieces about out of control youth parties.
So far, all this has achieved is to raise one young man to the status of party god.
Ben! Back from the mines, finally? We’ve missed you.
You did?
*blushes*
I missed this comic and the community that goes with it.
I heard about that… then saw the clip on youtube… in fact, it might have been you that pointed it out.
Genius, I wish something like that happened to me in my teens, I would have ruled them all.
