From the dock to the flock

I don’t know what television is like for most of you… so this may or may not be relevant.

Here in the UK, since the wide-spread arrival of digital and the so-called ‘freeview‘ system, many of the channels now feature the next episode of a particular series on another channel… it’s a feature that’s paraded around as if they are doing everyone a favour, allowing them to glimpse into the future.

Of course in reality, it is the absolute opposite… sort of. They are re-runs or repeats that just haven’t been shown yet.

It’s just a way to fill up twice the air-time with the same programme.

Oddly, one of the main offenders, when it was on, was the show Lost… a show that I watched. One day, after a particularly cliff-hangerish end, I was tempted to watch the next episode on another channel.

All was good.

But then next week came and I was faced with a dilemma. I’d already watched the first episode last week – do I stay up and watch the next week’s episode this week? Or, do I miss the next episode this week and watch the first episode next week?

No good can come of this much complexity in watching television. If I wanted to think I would have read a book or played a board game.

But here’s where I tie it all up… Jack Sheppard.

OK, so the character in Lost spells his surname differently, but you have to admit it’s close.

No, Mr Sheppard was imprisoned five times and managed to escape four times. A good percentage of success, but ultimately it did him little good.

But what he did do is help cultivate a view of criminality that still persists in this country… that it’s only OK to be a criminal if you are actually good at it and manage to carry off some part of your crime with style.

To finish with, another one . This time Sheppherdsville (note, what ‘additives’ exactly).

I believe the industry term is “prepeats”.

      That’s a great term… I like it a lot.

Thanks beemoh, you’ve given them a name for me which makes my rants about 5% more effective.

        Awesome.

Just make sure to do your next rant immediately after one website over.

That Jack Sheppard stuff is fascinating. Thank you for that. I’ve been singing ‘Mack The Knife’ for years and wondering who Mack was - turns out it was a a character based on Sheppard.

it’s a strange concept, that we can find criminality somewhat acceptable if it’s pulled of with debonair style.
    but it’s also understandable

    Things like this, I’d imagine:

I figured out why I wasn’t getting notifications, by the way. I think I fixed it. Either way, entirely my fault. Some days I’m dumber than others. Durrr.

Ha, I thought it was a euphemism for amphetamines.

“Some days I’m dumber than others”

I understand, my dumb hours are Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm.

So Mike the prison guard climbs into the secret tunnel,
grabs the protest placard and heads to the cemetary.
He bashes some anti-zombies with the sign, and
hides in the church. Does he pray for forgiveness?
Or does he declare god is on his side and become
    a cult leader?

Isn’t it odd, Tia, how D.B Cooper became
a hero for hijacking an airplane?

it is indeed, i wonder if he escaped safely or not.

there’s a book by Michael Creighton called “the great train robbery”, roughly based on the great gold robbery of 1855. it’s very cool

I watched a TV pseudo-documentary on that. Got to give it to him, legendary status achieved.

But wouldn’t they think *he* was a zombie?

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 15.04.2008 at 07:22 (Reply)

Hence the placard, without it they would think he was a zombie, with it he’s just some protester that’s covered in dirt.

      1. Davey Identicon Icon Davey on 15.04.2008 at 17:12 (Reply)

I just don’t see them being that accepting as he rises from the dirt. Afterward, sure. The idea that *none* of them are watching the yard for the obvious eventually…. I mean, c’mon, haven’t they ever watched a zombie movie?

Has any one mentioned Shawshank Redemption yet?
    Some one should.
Best movie (drama) of last century.

Ah, that was a good one. I still want to know how the guy found that field, with the wall. He didn’t have much to go on there, and there are a lot fields that look like that up there. But a good movie, nonetheless.

Mumble bumble… Shawshank Redemption, mumble grumble. Seriously tho, one of my favorite soundtracks of any film ever.

I had the same problem with Torchwood. It wasn’t possible for me to stay around to watch the next episode the week on after I’d already watched it’s predecessor on BBC3 the week before and ended up with a week of no Torchwood instead. BBC bastards.
