The colour of the internet

A functional post today, as opposed to the usual whimsy…

You may have noticed that I’ve been tinkering with the site. It was time for a spring clean, and as usual, cleaning just makes more mess.

At the moment, I’ve just made a few functional changes and temporarily altered some styles. I’m aiming for a cleaner look. It would be a real help if you could tell me what you find useful, awkward or annoying about the site… any improvements you’d like to see and anything you’d like to see disappear.

By request, I’ve added the actual comic images to the RSS feed, as those of you using this method can see. There will also be some improvements to the gallery and search options since the archives are getting on nicely.

I’m thinking about removing all of the colour from the site, going back to purely black and white… what do you think? And how should a show active links, by underlines, by bold?

I have a pretty clear idea how I would like the site to look, but I spend more time making stuff for it than I do actually reading it, so I only think it is fair that you should have a say.

Fire away.

Whenever I type “internet” in MS Office programs the spell-checker insists that I capitalize it: “Internet”.

Say, what happened to that WYSIWYG editor on the comments? Or is it still there and just not coming up for me?

The only real style thing I would suggest is bigger text, but that’s because I sit rather far away from my monitor and so sometimes I either have to squint or increase the text size (which screws up formatting).

The wysiwyg editor didn’t work for some people, and for others it proved a bit daunting… I am thinking of re-instating it again, but I need to find a limited version with just a few easy functions rather than the cumbersome one I used.

As for the text, that’s a fair point, I will increase it for the purpose of readability.

Ms Office is the tool of the devil. When I worked as a typesetter about half of my time was spent correcting its misguided formatting… like where it wants you to put commas when using the word ‘which’.

It’s a Microsoft product (that has to be spelled with a capital) so the internet is considered important as an entity, a proper noun… wheras I think the majority of its users see it purely like a road, or a telephone…

I think links should be underlined. That’s the traditional way to show them. I wouldn’t necessarily go with pure black and white since that can be hard on the eyes; it’d be a bit too stark, wouldn’t it?

    Red and Blue.
Cos that makes my head spin.
And every time you refresh the page or click a link in the archives, you should get a free puppy.

      That’s hilarious.

I’m really curious what happens when you install the “Squant plugin”… but I’m paranoid and I don’t want to install software from an obvious joke site. (Even if, in violation of all laws of physics, there were actually a fourth primary color, there would be no way to make your monitor “squant-capable” just by installing a plugin. So I have no idea what the plugin actually does.)

Same here… might try it out on one of the computers at work though, I don’t care for them so much.

It reminds me of the time, when I was seven, when a computer magazine printed the code for a program that would double the memory of my 48k spectrum.

I was sceptical. I knew that it was a physical limitation, rather than a software thing. But I was curious enough to spend three days labouriously typing it all in.

When I finally ran the program all that happened was the phrase ‘April Fools’ printed on screen. A few thousand lines of code to do that.

That was the day that I learned two things. 1. Never trust software you don’t trust. 2.Always check to make sure it isn’t April 1st.

I’m also tempted to install it, but I have only just gotten my machine running properly after some video card updates and AV patches, so I am not risking it.
Probably wouldn’t work with Opera anyway.

It fails after you choose an install location. Closes with some unexpected error. It’s still in beta. ¬_¬

We aim to please… slowly, after months of nagging.
