Mixing it up

A collaborative project today.

It’s summer and that means hot, humid nights sat outside with my friends… time to resurrect the portable tape player and slap on some mixtapes.

So, that’s what I want to do – make a mix tape with you.

Let’s get all High Fidelity

I want you to suggest tracks that fit the ‘hot, humid nights sat outside with my friends’ theme. It’s fairly abstract as themes go, so hopefully we should end up with a diverse mix. You might have to explain why you have chosen a particular track though.

Points will be awarded for suitability, humour, lyrical significance and tuneship.

We’ll also need a title, preferably a smart, funny one that will make me look good…

I’m going with “Tossed Away” by The Heart Throbs. The song just exudes hot humid nightness. I was gonna go with “The Bastard of Strathcona County” by Captain Tractor, but I already plugged that song to someone else this week and despite having a catchy title it’s not entirely appropriate.

    Sounds Of Then - Gangajang
    Mostly an Aussie song.

I can think of a dozen more, but things to do….. hehe

The Herd’s State of Transit. “Share a tale or two, and watch the sun go down.” Great stuff, grab a preview here.

    warm july - sodastream,
    Ladyflash - the go! team

so it seems that three of four comments are from australians, wishing it was that summer mixtape time of the year for us…

Up here in Mackay, it is summerish.
I’m sitting on the couch watching time life commercials in my shorts, fan on, and thinking of getting another icy pole from the freezer.

I forgot about that, it was a bit insensitive of me… still, from what I gather the Australian winter is comparable with the British summer…

the go! team, perfect summer night music! just got proof of youth, am loving it
true, although i hate summer weather, it does mean more good times than this dreary season

I would suggest anything by this Australian band I’m a big fan of, The Cat Empire, especially tracks off their first and second albums. The Beck album Midnite Vultures is pretty sweet, although its more summer day than summer night. And oh! I’ve just thought, the perfect band for this mixtape is Little Barrie! Or Phoenix! Wow Adam, I could make you a list from here til forever (I am about 95% music, am just slightly obsessed). You shouldn’t have gotten me started.

Excellent choices. Forgot about Phoenix, but you’re right they are perfect for summer evenings.

I’ll try to listen to the others this week. I’ll let you know how I get on.

phoenix are pretty much my favourite band. i say that, but i could never really decide on who my favourite band is.

Summer Hit by The Wombats. How else are you going to get that “God I need to do SOMETHING with my life” feeling that always comes around when sitting with friends during the summer?

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 22.06.2008 at 19:55 (Reply)

I get that feeling regardless of the season… I know what you mean though, it’s a time for reflection, which usually ends up with – “God I need to do SOMETHING with my life”

We don’t get a lot of hot, humid summer nights on the prairie. Rather we get blazing hot days, and coolish dry evenings. Sometimes thunderstorms. Nonetheless, my summer mixes will always include John Hammond’s “I’m Tore Down”. For some reason, summer nights always mean the Blues for me, and that song is a great blend of modern R&B with classic blues.

Also, if you grew up with my family, you can’t have a gathering of people without at least one Neil Young song. I’d suggest putting “Unplugged” or “Greatest Hits”, or if you’re in the mood for some variety, “Borrowed Tunes 2″ (which is a tribute album) on repeat and letting the evening work its magic.

Neil Young goes so well with summer, esp, with long road trips in summer.
I made my gf listen to Harvest during an 8hr road trip last friday.

Sweet Child O’ Mine - Guns ‘N’ Roses
    Flagpole Sitta - Harvey Danger

    They just…suit, I feel.

Harvey Danger always fits the mood! They’re awesome like that!

Anything off The Who’s Quadrophenia album is pretty good; “Love, Reign O’er Me” is best.

You know the scene… with Lesley Ash in the alleyway? When I lived in Brighton I walked along that same alley as a shortcut on my way to work.

So then, so far we have:

Tossed Away – The Heart Throbs
    Sounds Of Then – Gangajang
State of Transit – The Herd
    Warm July – Sodastream,
    Ladyflash – The Go! Team
    Anything by The Cat Empire
    Summer Hit – The Wombats
I’m Tore Down – John Hammond
    Some Neil Young
Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns ‘N’ Roses
    Flagpole Sitta – Harvey Danger
Love, Reign O’er Me – The Who

I’ll endevour to sort this out this week… feel free to add some more… and I’ll let you know how it plays out.

So far the secondary theme appears to be o-apostraphe.

Doesn’t mention anything “hot” but it’s steamy and there is a line about the sky tumbling down which I guess we could take as global warming or something. And it’s about night.
