Like Voltron

One thing we have going for us, here at Flowfield Towers, is strength in numbers.

And so it’s time to test a little of that might to help one of our members out… after all, if one of us does well, we all do well.

Brandy happens to be involved in a voting situation here:

http://2008.weblogawards.org/nominations/best-liberal-blog/

If you scroll down to the bottom, where the comments are, you’ll find her, and Moue Magazine. Just click the + sign to register a vote.

And, whilst we are on the subject, what can we do for you?

Go play my flash game, it’s basically finished. : )

      The game: http://evo.dmlcorp.net/

I enjoyed that. It reminded my of the mechanics of some of the Spectrum games I used to enjoy too.

    4. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 10.11.2008 at 09:54 (Reply)

So, are you planning on doing anything with this when it’s finished? Competitions, distribution, that sort of thing? Or is it just for personal satisfaction?

      1. DmL Identicon Icon DmL on 10.11.2008 at 22:23 (Reply)

Well, I’m going to fix it up a little, and leave it as part of the story flow of my comic. If people think it’s a good idea, I’ll do another one. I like to think that my comic is one of those that are actually using it’s webitudity fully, or at least trying to. Not just still pics, but games, videos, animations, depending on how I feel and what I think shows the story best.

I’m also planning an extended version as a bit of value add on the comic site. I’m thinking of submitting it to newgrounds, too, maybe some other places. I’m also thinking of spending a little money on advertising, and now I can say, “Comic! Game!”

It’s all just been my own satisfaction so far, but I wouldn’t mind if others got some satisfaction out of it, and if eventually it would help me be satisfactory full-time. : )

I think they are all linked somehow… Voltron was constructed from two unrelated Japanese anime – GoLion and Dairugger XV – The version i drew here is ‘Lion Force Voltron’, based on the GoLion series, as opposed to the Vehicle Voltron.

Oh, man, this is so geeky it’s starting to hurt.

The link with Power Rangers is supplied by Bandai, who are involved in both production and merchandising in both cases.

How does an engineer prove that all odd numbers are prime?
3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, so by induction…

How does a physicist prove that all odd numbers are prime?
3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, 9 is experimental error…

How does a psychologist prove that all odd numbers are prime?
3, 5, 7, 11, and 13 are all prime. From this sample set we can conclude…

How does an arts major prove that all odd numbers are prime?
      3 is prime, 5 is prime, 7 is prime, 9 is prime…

We need more math humor on the net. Nice comic, by the way.

    I voted!

And I’m frankly surprised that no one’s derailed this into a political discussion of the American election. Obama, anyone?

    1. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 10.11.2008 at 19:03 (Reply)

Thanks! And a vote for me is a vote for Obama (retroactively and unofficially).

I think Americans (and non Americans that were paying close attention) are still recovering from election fatigue/withdraw.

        1. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 11.11.2008 at 09:34 (Reply)

If McCain had won, I’d be immigrating to your country right now.

The election was played out a bit heavily in the global media but there were two ways the story could end: America pulls out of its nosedive or America tries to take the rest of the world down with it. We’ve been doing the latter for the past eight years. We- and the countries we grab onto- would prefer not to go that route for another four years. We’d like to try the “pull out of nosedive” route now.

    2. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 11.11.2008 at 09:22 (Reply)

I deliberately avoided the subject… I figured that we pretty much have it covered.

Obama has a huge expectation to live up to.

      1. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 11.11.2008 at 09:38 (Reply)

It would be nearly impossible for him to live up to his “change” hype but he seems to be ready to make some fast and firm changes- mostly fixing what Bush screwed up. He’s making interesting staffing choices. If nothing else, it’ll give me something interesting to write about for the next four to eight years.

        1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 11.11.2008 at 11:29 (Reply)

In many ways like Clinton? He used a similar rhetoric… and actually did deliver on some of it (although I feel he will be remembered more for his personal issues). As an outsider, he seemed pretty stable and useful.

In fact, Clinton and O have a lot of similarities, from an artistic perspective. That is to say that they both appeal to the liberal arts sector – both campaigns were supported by many artists, far more than the Reps were.

I wonder if we’ll see an increase in arts spending again – obviously post recession/depression – and a slightly more liberal attitude all round to what constitutes art. In the long run this might lead to some more challenging and interesting pieces.

I see that the new administration is going into emergency mode to undo those laws passed in the last days of the campaign, you know, the drilling, the abortion, the security… once passed, hard to undo. Oh and stem cell research, whilst we are at it, bring on the SCR.

          1. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 11.11.2008 at 20:39 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

Yeah, there are definite similarities to Bill Clinton and Obama’s actually hiring a lot of similar staff (his Chief of Staff was a Clinton staffer and loyalist).

And-unfortunately- the Obama administration will probably have to be in “emergency mode” for various reasons for the next two to four years. I joked to my grandfather that when Obama met Bush at the White House that Obama should have just punched Bush for creating this mess for him to clean up.

More emphasis on the arts would be nice. Especially since many states have decided that arts are horrible and need to be abolished, in favor of academic classes that are way over people’s heads because elementary schools don’t get enough funding/attention to teach them basic principles of math, science, and reading.

I’m a little bitter about it.

i was a little disappointed in how the election turned out, as my most readily available excuse for going to school in some other country evaporated, but at least i won’t have to pretend I’m Canadian when i do get to travel.

i’m currently waiting to see if an exchange group will agree to take me to japan with them this next summer. if they do take me, i’ll have to raise a bit over 6,000 dollars. that seems a little beyond the scope of an after school job and it’s impossible to get anywhere without a car anyway. any ideas?

Interest free loans from the ‘rents?

You could set up a PayPal donation site, and then take out free ads anywhere that’ll give them to you (Brandy’s mag, I’d bet you Adam would give you one if you asked real nice… etc.) for the site. Six thousand dollars is six thousand people giving you one dollar, or three thousand give you two, or twelve hundred giving you five. I’d donate a couple bucks to the cause — what’re friends for, eh?

Offer to mail handwritten thank-yous to anyone that gives more’n a dollar, maybe.

What sell-able skills do you have? Work form home schemes? Selling things on Etsy or something, maybe? You’ll think of something.

        1. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 11.11.2008 at 20:44 (Reply)

I second Roo on the donation/marketable skills suggestions. There are hundreds of freelance job sites for writers/graphic designers/web designers/etc. to get work if you have any of those skills. And once I pick up a few of those freelance gigs myself, I’ll toss you a few bucks too :) (And you’re welcome to put an ad to a donation page at my site but I’m not sure how far it’ll get you since my readers tend to be intellectuals and artists- aka broke).

I’m not sure, but this seems like the sort of thing that there might be funding or grants for… I’ll ask around and see if anyone knows, but it might be worth talking to the people that organise the exchange as they will be aware of how people have managed it in the past.
