Gender studies

I wanted to write an inciteful article about handwriting. Why different people have different styles, and if that really does give any indication as to your personality.

However, the first site I came to was this one: Handwriting Personality Quiz

I thought I would give you a walk-through of my experiences before you try it out yourself.

OK, step one. I’m presented with a large empty box with the instructions Please provide a handwriting sample in the box below using your mouse (click and hold the mouse button to draw). A signature (first name and last name) is preferable.

I decide not to take any heed of those instructions and just write my first name. It looks like this:

handwriting

First, you’ll notice that when writing using a mouse, it looks absolutely nothing like your writing as it would with your hand and a pen. I imagine those of you with tablets may have better luck here.

Second, as I wrote this, my name was pronounced, in my head, in a similar fashion to Matt Damon’s in Team America.

Right, on to the questions…

1. Relative to the size of the box, how much space does your handwriting take up?

I went for option 3 – Why is the box so small – not because of how it related to my writing, but because it seemed like an interesting philosophical question.

2. What style is your handwriting?

Since ‘Remedial’ was not an option, I chose, ‘Entirely in print’.

3. Which direction does your handwriting slant?

I don’t think this question is enquiring into the sexual preferences of my handwriting, but since the answer was supplied, Straight up and down it is… despite being all over the place.

4. Between each word, there is

This question is asking about space between words. I didn’t take this into account when writing only one, so any answer I choose will be technically false. Always read the instructions carefully… it’s too late to go back now, so I chose little or no space.

5. Last question! You embellish your signature with

Again, the answers lacked the correct options, else I would have chosen, ‘gravitas’… but alas, I had to settle for nothing.

And so, another press of the next button and I get my assessment.

You fill every waking moment with activity.
You are a person who thinks before acting, intelligent and thorough.
You are diplomatic, objective, and live in the present.
You are not very reserved, impatient, self-confident and fond of action.
You enjoy life in your own way

Let’s take these one by one, shall we?

You fill every waking moment with activity – Yeah, that’s me, breathing, moving, that sort of thing. Very active.

You are a person who thinks before acting, intelligent and thorough – Sure, that’s why I only wrote my first name when asked to provide two or more words.

You are diplomatic, objective, and live in the present – True, I like to live in the present, it’s where everything is happening.

You are not very reserved, impatient, self-confident and fond of action – I’m not reserved or self-confident? I spend all of my time in a constant state of angst. Nor am I so impatient that I will only read half a set of instructions on a silly handwriting test.

You enjoy life in your own way – This makes me sound like the idiot I am. ‘In my own way’ suggests that I’m not really enjoying it, but I’m trying the best that my feeble brain can come up with.

So, whilst I am dubious as to what my handwriting says about my personality, I can say with some degree of certainty that handwriting tests reveal me to be a cantankerous, impatient egotist. Great.

And I’ve just noticed that the same site has a ‘what do your drawings say about your personality’ quiz. I’m going to do it soon, but I fear I already know the answer.

Well i done the test too, biggest load of rubbish but this is what i got lol.

‘You plan ahead, and are interested in beauty, design, outward appearance, and symmetry. (I plan ahead? No. Never. symmetry well yes, i do like having my two eyes, arms and legs where they are, makes life a lot easier)

You are a shy, idealistic person who does not find it easy to have relationships, especially intimate ones. ( I’m shy? ME? SHY? ehhh, no. i dont find it easy having relationships? I beg to differ, my engagement ring will back me up on this one lol)

You are negative, fearful, resistant, doubtful, and/or selfish. (Well thats just rude)

You are a talkative person, maybe even a busybody! (Okay im very very very very talkative so thats right. )

You enjoy life in your own way and do not depend on the opinions of others’ (Emm well okay fine, two are right then!)

This is what it told me:

You like to be surrounded by four solid walls. (True! Shame the termites ate one.)
You are a social person who likes to talk and meet others. (I’m actually a rabid introvert but I play extrovert to keep others happy.)
You are affectionate, passionate, expressive, and future-oriented. (Eh. I guess I was once.)
You are not very reserved, impatient, self-confident and fond of action. (True! Wait, does that mean I’m not very impatient? Then…)
You enjoy life in your own way and do not depend on the opinions of others. (YES.)

I *was* going to scoff at it before I clicked the link, considering I think I write like a serial killer, but the analysis has fed my inner teenager. Thanks!

    1) You like to be surrounded by four solid walls. (And a ceiling, preferably.)
    2) You are a social person who likes to talk and meet others. (…sometimes? this seems to contradict #4)
    3) You are diplomatic, objective, and live in the present. (yes, this is true)
    4) You are reserved, shy, cautious, and thoughtful. (this is true, too)
    5) You are self-confident and like to bring attention to yourself. (oh, god no… and again contradicts #4)

    Maybe I’m just contradictory.

now, for a scathing comment…no, wait, its all very correct! oh, except maybe that i dont find it easy to have relationships. other than that, its pretty much me.

    1. You fill every waking moment with activity

    4. You are not very reserved, impatient, self-confident and fond of action

I am going to assume that the latter can be bracketed thus:

You are [not very reserved], [impatient], [self-confident] and [fond of action]

    instead of:

You are not very [reserved], [impatient], [self-confident] and [fond of action]

because otherwise it contradicts both itself and #1.

Oh, and I also take extreme offense at phrases like “between each word.” As you so astutely pointed out, there can be no “between” for a single word. It’s “between each two words.”

-You plan ahead, and are interested in beauty, design, outward appearance, and symmetry.
    >>Yes; I tend to have formulas for certain things like painting and love curves on a woman–there are so many different curves! “Interested in beauty”? Inner or outer? If both; then I can live with that.

-You are a social person who likes to talk and meet others.
    >>Fuck no! But I like to talk sometimes. Only if I have to meet others. Does typing count as “talking”?

-You are affectionate, passionate, expressive, and future-oriented.
    >>(Not true, not true, true. I have goals–but I’m a lazy-fuck, I think that’s what “future-oriented”
    means.

-You are a talkative person, maybe even a busybody!
    >>Don’t get me started now. Sometimes I just need a slap in the face to shut up. Really; this
is true. But I start off really relaxed with a calm demeanor until I’m in full steam, this is
    where I go ape-shit .

-You enjoy life in your own way and do not depend on the opinions of others.
    >>I agree with what Adam said there. That sounded like a contradiction; but being in
agreement doesn’t count as “dependent on the opinions of others”. I think that made sense.

    God. I’ll shut up now.

The answers provided are as general as horoscopes. They could apply to anyone in the abstract.

I have the peculiar ability to completely alter my handwriting. There are five or six handwriting styles I can switch between, each completely different from the other. It used to throw my teachers off quite a bit. I’d have to prove to them that I had written the assignment. I can also pick up accents really easily. I should have been a spy.

    1. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 04.02.2009 at 08:47 (Reply)

I also have the issue with accents. People will think I’m a local with in a week of me arriving in the US.
I can change handwriting styles, but if I don’t concentrate, I do it in the middle of words.

Adam’s handwriting loks about like mine, save that his is far far neater. We both write in all caps, we both have angular letters with no slant. We both write in pictures as often as words.

I think that means Adam is actually me, reincarnated, but too early. Cosmic flub-up.

  11. McClackers Identicon Icon McClackers on 03.02.2009 at 00:01 (Reply)

Yeah my handwriting changes a lot too, i also once got pulled in class because a teacher thought someone else done half of my coursework!!!! It was more like half of it was rushed because i done it on the way to the class!

The worst thing though is everytime i go to the bank i have to sign my name like 3 times because it never matches up!

    Awesome!

I think you would have better luck with astrology, seriously.

    1. Melanthios Identicon Icon Melanthios on 04.02.2009 at 14:05 (Reply)

Astrology deals with a lot less in terms of variables, so yes. Astrology is far more accurate.

Also I can’t see why five questions are enough to analyse one’s handwriting. More like fifty. And usualy the proper sample isn’t your signature, it’s just a random paragraph.

      1. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 06.02.2009 at 11:21 (Reply)

I was joking about the astrology.
I seriously doubt the ability of anything to be able to determine some ones personality with out a long and thorough pscyhological session, some decent stress testing, etc.
Anything that only shallowly analyses the person or one facet of the person is bound to be doomed to failure (sing the “doom” song as you read that).

You mean ‘insightful’, right? As in, full of insight? Not full of citations? XD

Anyway, I’ve always wanted to go to a handwriting analyst. Have you tried that online device that tells you what gender you supposedly are, based on a sample of text? It’s interesting.

Recently found that, thought it might interest someone to try it and see how it compares to the handwriting quiz adam talked about.

According to the results from mine, im the life of the party, yet cold and emotionally withdrawn, and i dont like risks and im free from inhibitions…most of that was wrong but the video was quite amusing!

    Mine said:
You plan ahead, and are interested in beauty, design, outward appearance, and symmetry. (I don’t plan ahead, but otherwise correct enough)
You are a social person who likes to talk and meet others. (I hate meeting new people, and, if I weren’t married with 2 kids I’d probably never speak)
You are diplomatic, objective, and live in the present. (I’m about as diplomatic as a fist to the face, but I do prefer to live in the present)
You are a talkative person, maybe even a busybody! (Like I said before, I don’t talk much, and I hate gossipers)
You enjoy life in your own way and do not depend on the opinions of others. (Other people are stupid, why should I care about their opinions?)
