Uncle words

How was your Friday 13th?

Well, since you ask, mine was pretty cool.

The first thing, and considering the second, the least important… I received an unconditional offer for my course at university. I left a scientist and I return an artist.

More importantly though, my little sister and her husband brought a new person into the world, the fantastic Stan – making me an uncle.

Welcome in little fella, it’s a strange place, but I have a feeling you’re going to like it.

So, any other words of wisdom we can give to the new boy?

Life’s too short to dance with ugly girls, and too ugly not to dance with short ones.

Can there be passes made to girls with glasses?

      1. DmL Identicon Icon DmL on 16.02.2009 at 06:20 (Reply)

I don’t understand the connection…? Aren’t girls with glasses kinda an automatic win?

According to Dorothy Parker, “men seldom make passes at girls with glasses.”

No accounting for taste I guess.

I refuse to make glasses for girls with passes.

*nearly tried to fit the word ‘asses’ into my reply*

          I concur… glasses are cool.

        I want to amend that.

We’ve ordered you some elves with poor eyesight, should be with you in less than 28 days. Enjoy.

Also, congrats. As a father and an uncle, I can tell you it’s a real hoot.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:24 (Reply)

Thank you, it is really cool.

I’m looking forward to the point where he’s mobile and easily entertained.

Do you get to spend alot of time with? It’s incredibly fascinating watching them grow and learn, and each little thing they understand is an amazing triumph.

My advice is to never smell you uncles breath, as he’s an “artist” it will smell of stale tobacco and cheap red wine!
Firm hand shakes and fake smiles have got me to where i am today, but i hate it, so your probably right. ( just work! not your sis or nephew!)
    Nice strip.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:26 (Reply)

      Thanks Mr Kong…

Hey! Congrats on the uncle-hood! For those of us who aren’t of the UKish persuasion, does the course thing mean you’re going to be a student or a teacher?

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:28 (Reply)

I’m going to be a student:

I have a degree in biochemistry, but I’m going to be do my masters degree in art… jumping ship, so to speak.

  5. Brandy Identicon Icon Brandy on 16.02.2009 at 02:01 (Reply)

Congrats, again, on the little one! I’m not sure that I really have that much advice to give, I’m afraid. I’m still figuring out most of this stuff myself. But when my grandfather was dying of cancer, he took me aside and told me two things he had always lived by and wanted me to know.

    1. You can rarely control the behavior of others but you can control your own.

    And

    2. If someone insists on being completely unreasonable, don’t antagonize them. Smile and walk away and you’ve won the argument.

Not sure how great either of those are but seeing as they’re the only ones I’ve been given, I offer them up.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:29 (Reply)

That’s some solid advice… and advice I should probably take. Walking away from an argument is not something I often do, much to my detriment.

  6. Chris Identicon Icon Chris on 16.02.2009 at 04:02 (Reply)

Well there are lots of cliched words of wisdom that I could re-quote, but I’m not really into that. So my only recommendation is to have fun.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:33 (Reply)

that’s really good advice too… I think it’s something that almost everyone forgets at some point. If you’re not having fun you’re not doing it right.

Congrats on both the news and another thoughtful comic.

I’m really hoping thet they’ve actually called him “The Fantastic Stan”, though.

    2. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:34 (Reply)

      Thanks.

the fantastic stan would be a great name… but I’m more than happy enough to know that we share a middle name.

  9. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 16.02.2009 at 14:51 (Reply)

Congratulations Adam! Wonderful news, on all fronts. And Backs.

Those three pieces of advice sum up how to deal with the world, really well. I might add “Never turn down a root-beer float,” and maybe something like “learn from the past, plan for the future, live in the present,” if’n it weren’t so bloody cliched. Little Fantastic’s got a good Uncle to guide him — I’m sure he’ll do fine. Juts fine.

    1. Maddie Identicon Icon Maddie on 21.02.2009 at 09:48 (Reply)

Wonderful news on all sides and bottoms too! ;)

      Congratulations Adman.

I can’t really advise any advice since you’ve all gotten further through life than I have as of yet, but the best thing to remember is that when you’re young, adults are often horrible, irritating people who only get in your way. And once you grow up, teenagers are always horrible, irritating creatures that only get in your way (and these days, steal your wallet).

Enjoy being the fun uncle, Ad.

I’m so happy for you! its really sweet you dedicated a comic strip to him, thats the unltimate display of affection and love!
    1.Marvel is better than DC
    2. You are never to old to watch disney or enjoy cartoons
    3. the original is always the best
    and finally and most important….
4.never be afraid to be yourself

i hope you enjoy uncle-hood adam, i’m so happy for you, and for your sister. I bet she was glad to fianlly deliver you lovely little nephew

    1. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 17.02.2009 at 00:45 (Reply)

Advice number 3 was solidly disproved with the Batman series. The originals were terrible, the new ones are great. Simple fact.

    2. Ambroziak Identicon Icon Ambroziak on 17.02.2009 at 21:02 (Reply)

yeah like Ben said, 3 is not always accurate. this goes as well for music, the two that popped into my head were Nirvana’s version of Lake of Fire, and George Thorogood’s version of one bourbon, one scotch, one beer. Though John Lee Hooker’s version is still good. I’m sure there are many more.

And as for my words of wisdom.
Keep your head up when walking, but be sure to glance down to dodge poo.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:36 (Reply)

      Oh yes.

I’ve already planned on introducing Stan to ‘uncle’ Vonnegut.

  12. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 17.02.2009 at 00:48 (Reply)

Congratulations. As a fellow uncle, the only advice I can give you is:
1- Buy the kid the noisiest toys you can find.
2- If you have to look after it, feed it sugar and right before you hand it back, coffee or red cordial.
3- You aren’t there to discipline the child. Be fun.

For the child itself, I guess the best advice I know is:
-Hope for the best, expect the worst.

    1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 19.02.2009 at 12:38 (Reply)

I like your style… treat them like clockwork… wind them up and let them go…

Not sure that’s the route to regular access though. Besides, I’m to suceptible to being hyper myself…

      1. Maddie Identicon Icon Maddie on 21.02.2009 at 09:44 (Reply)

Congratulations! He’s lucky to have you for an uncle, good uncles are a treasure.

I like your advice. I guess all I can tell him is what I tell myself: always remember what makes you happy and don’t lose yourself in what makes you unhappy.

These are not my quotes, but I do agree with many of them from this book:

Life’s Little Instruction Book. Some quotes I like from the book:

“Marry a woman you love to talk to. As you get older, her conversational skills will be as important as any other”.

“Be quick to take advantage of an advantage”.

“Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have, or sleep all you want”.

    “Talk slow but think quick”.

    Chow.

      Or….

Marry a man you love listening to. As he gets older, his conversational skills will fade just like any other.

      1. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 19.02.2009 at 22:51 (Reply)

A man says something nice and a woman shoots it down in cynicism.
Typical, get used to it Stan.

What is the significance of 3.44 9.62 and left handed hand shakes?
I was waiting for some one else to ask, but they never did :(

    1. Rachel Identicon Icon Rachel on 20.02.2009 at 04:49 (Reply)

I believe it is 3.4 + 9.62 and if i am correct it is 13.02 which might stand for February 13th and might be stan’s birthday.
bt this is completely a guess.

      1. Adam Identicon Icon Adam on 20.02.2009 at 10:32 (Reply)

    2. Ben Identicon Icon Ben on 20.02.2009 at 12:18 (Reply)

Ah, that was a plus sign? I guess that is what I get for assuming that everyone would formatt consistently.

      So, the left handed shake?
