Too soon?

Maybe it is… Maybe the Fritzl case is still too fresh, too recent… maybe the death of reality star Jade Goody is off-limits because she died today… maybe… maybe not.

My point is that there’s a reason why we joke about these things. Through humour we can talk about things that are too horrible to contemplate in any serious manner. And yes, it sometimes comes across as bad taste, but usually the people who see it as such haven’t really grasped the context and meaning of what is being said.

I’ve heard it called black comedy, mortuary humour or gallows humour… the idea that stressful events can be relieved and placed in context through laughing at them. It’s not insensitivity, it’s the opposite. It’s the need to talk about things we lack the emotional dexterity and the distance to discuss.

Besides, is it any more in bad taste to joke about something like this than it is to talk about it endlessly or read about it in print, revelling in all the gory details?

To be fair, it’s better that we make the Fritzl jokes and keep everything out in the open, rather than bury it.

        If you think that’s bad:

…this is just going to become a dumpbox for the worst kind of humour, isn’t it? :)

          Yes, yes it is.

          Bad taste and good puns.

I have a mate who is a volunteer firey and his humour is pretty black.
I told him this one day and he replied “maybe, but it’s not as black as Victoria”.

I really have nothing against black humour. There is something funny in everything, regardless of how bad it is and anyway, all the anti-blackhumour crowd will be joking about it in a few weeks-months.

Yet it is often the darkest humour that provokes the most spontaneous laughter. We should all be ashamed of ourselves. I’m off to do some ‘bundying’…

And if you’re “bundying” is unsuccessful, would you keep at it until you got your fill? And risk being memorable enough that descriptions of your yellow beetle and cast make it into police reports?

Shortly after I saw this comic last night, I went into the kitchen to get something to eat. The television in the living room was on and they were reporting on a plane that crashed into a cemetery.

    “One stop shopping,” I remarked.

I think black humor is especially common among groups of people that know each other well. You would already know what your best friend really thought of the Fritzl case so all that’s left to do is joke about it and compartmentalize some of the horror.

I’ve had a very dry, somewhat dark sense of humor sense childhood. Used to get me into loads of trouble from adults that didn’t get it.

I think when it comes to humour, if you’re going to call one thing off limits because it might offend people, you’re going to have to put aside a lot of other potential material, because as a rule, anything funny will offend someone, somewhere.

So all of it has to be fair game… you might choose not to pursue a certain joke if you don’t think it’s funny, but don’t worry too much about the audience. Well… I suppose if you know you have a specific audience then maybe, but don’t worry about the general “audience”, by which I mean everyone everywhere.

Everyone everywhere has a _terrible_ collective sense of humour… sure it’s all fun and laughs when you’re just joking about like normal, but make one little dead baby/holocaust/serial killer/religious/race/sex joke and Boom! Someone’s on your case for it.

    To close –
How do you turn a pink baby red?
    – Use a blender
How do you get the baby out of the blender?
    – Doritos.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Matt, you got it wrong. It’s how do you get 10 dead babies into a bath-blender, how do you get them out, nachos/straw.

I know a few too many dead baby jokes. They’re disgusting, but they’re too funny not to remember. I also know a few interchangeable racist/ginger jokes. And, ashamedly, some Jade Goody ones as well. I’m avoiding using those in good company.

I think they were just lines connecting the mouth to text… my preffered method.

To be honest, i only used a bubble because I wanted to draw the room dark and had to have some way of preserving the text.

Oh, and what’s that Mr Hewitt..? is that..? it is… it’s VOLES OF THE DUSK! available to order!

Good comic. My mates have just signed for a new house with a basement, which they are planning to name ‘the Fritzl-Mosely Suite’. They’re getting quotes for neon signs and everything.

Oh, and its not too soon to make Jade Goody jokes. Its never to soon to make Jade Goody jokes.

Nice comic. I agree entirely on the whole “Black Humour” thing. Either everything can be used as a joke or nothing can.
