Drinking to the Macs

Drinking to the Macs

I’m joking kids. Drink sensibly, have a designated keyboard operator.

Graphics tablets… I’m wondering if one will help me draw things quicker, but I know it won’t help me draw things better.

It certainly won’t make me a better artist…

What would?

I was thinking the other day that I’d probably be a better writer if I drank more. Or used cocaine. They seem to be a commonality among good writers.

Time and experience make for better artists. Although you’re already so good you won’t need much of either to produce something fantastic.

Flattery makes me a better artist!

      Thanks, lady.

I’m not sure about the alcohol and writing… mostly because reading whilst drunk is horrible.

flattery is indeed a fair muse

I full agree with the sentiment about the art. :)

Cocaine does not make for better writing; it just makes for more writing, more quickly. Alcohol leads (or aids) the soul-crushing depression that ultimately makes for good, if posthumous, writing.

well, it takes some practice to use a tablet properly, but if you’re ever interested in coloring things digitally i hear it’s the way to go.

as for me, i’d probably get better if i had more time, or just learned to get things done more efficiently. i don’t get enough sleep.

I’ve heard they can be a little tricky to begin with… do you have one… and if so what sort?

And what is it ,Tia, that keeps you awake at night?

my sister got a wacom tablet used. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, but it was pretty cheap.

Time and space. Not in the hippy-trippy 2-of-3 dimensions way, just the literal sense. Time to work and a space to do it in.
I am in short supply of both at the moment and the art is low …

Failing that, I shitload of coffee and travel.

Oh, coffee, that’s a classic artist drug… no of this depressing alcohol stuff…

I agree with the time and space thing. Having just got myself some decent studio space.

The upshot of this is that I don’t have to sleep in the same room in which I conduct me (mostly toxic) art experiments. Happy times.

What’s restricting your space and time at the moment?

    2. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 01.04.2009 at 16:23 (Reply)

I feel your pain… a full time job with a commute, and I’m still conducting my toxic artistic experiments in my bedroom. Space can make such a difference.

Inspiration is the single most important thing. No amount of talent and technology can make up for it.

This is interesting, even if you don’t agree completely:

    1. Tia Identicon Icon Tia on 01.04.2009 at 15:39 (Reply)

what is that, tho? is it magic? that’s too unreliable for me. i’ll take lots of practice

      1. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 01.04.2009 at 16:26 (Reply)

Inspiration is no good without the practice to have the skill to utilize it, right? You can have GREAT ideas, but if you’ve not developed the skills to get that idea onto paper the way you see it in your head, no one but you will ever appreciate it. I’m with Tia — give me lots of practice, and the inspiration will come.

      2. Abhijit Identicon Icon Abhijit on 01.04.2009 at 17:39 (Reply)

Tia, Roo.. Sorry if my comment sounded pretentious. :)

It’s the difference between being able to speak, and having something you want to talk about. No amount of practice can make you feel strongly about something.

How many people can play guitar? How many of those can write a good song? Not a song that sounds like a song, but a song that gives you goosebumps.

        1. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 01.04.2009 at 17:43 (Reply)

No worries Abhijit — I know what you mean. I’m just trying to point out that you need both, and, at least to some degrees, once you’re good at something, you’ll use that skill. There are a lot of very skilled artists that never get beyond what I would consider very boring landscapes and still lives… but what ever floats your boat, right? But it’s not the spine chilling inspiration of a Bacon piece, this is true.

          1. Abhijit Identicon Icon Abhijit on 01.04.2009 at 18:01 (Reply) (Comments won't nest below this level)

            Oh.

I thought you were talking about bacon bacon, AND that you were being sarcastic.

I haven’t seen his paintings. The only painters I’ve ever explored are Van Gogh and his contemporaries (mostly because of the fict-bio ‘Lust for Life’), and M.F. Hussain, because of the controversy his paintings had generated here in India.

That painting is grotesque (in a good sense). He must have led one crazy life.

          4. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 01.04.2009 at 18:55 (Reply)

Oh man…. nothing more modern than Van Gogh? Read a bit about Francis Bacon, it’ll make you happy:

            http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Bacon_(painter)

You might have stumbled into a situation where you mind will be opened. Painting has come a long way since Impressionism. This fellow might interest you a bit, and maybe this fellow or this one. And and… man, well, a lot’s happened, and is happening. Good exploring too.

Thanks for the links, though.. I promise to educate myself.

I bought an A4 sized tablet for photoshopping, etc.
The pen broke, so now I am desinging a new pen for it.

To answer your question, I think the tablets are great, but they are different from using a pen and paper.

Personally, I think your drawing is great as it is.

I’m not going to stop using pen an ink for my comics… It’s more for my animation work. I’m doing some frame-by-frame work at the moment, and it’s taking ages with a mouse. Plus I don’t get the benefits of pressure sensitivity.

Actually, that’s one thing I’ve noticed… the pens all seem a little flimsy…

Uh, I have a graphics tablet, but I don’t use it. I can’t draw anyway, so it won’t improve anything >.<
