Roo’s guide to dining in the UK

You all know Roo, right?

He made this comic…

Well, last year I got to meet him when he came over here to walk the infamous Offa’s Dyke trail.

Being a host and a representative of the UK in general I decided to treat my Trans-Atlantic friend (who had just travelled for hours on a flight) to a trip around the city of Manchester.

We wandered the art galleries, we strode the streets (an awful lot due to my terrible sense of direction) and we sought coffee…

Then the night came and the coffee turned into alcohol… a lot of it, because that’s what we do here.

I’ve never apologised to Roo for dragging him around after an epic journey, getting him superbly doused in drink and leaving him with only a few hours sleep before he had to embark on a trek through deepest darkest Wales.

I do feel a little guilty about the state in which I left him (the next day I went home to bed, knowing he was off for a train journey, a hike and then a night in a tent on a lonely hillside)… So, sorry Roo, I hope the hangover isn’t your only memory of a night out in Manchester, and when i turn up in your neck of the woods, please feel free to retaliate.

Oh, you know I plan on retaliating. If you make it out to Philadelphia, we have a number of fie local breweries we can visit: Victory Brewery is located here, as well as the lesser known Nodding Head Brewery and Dock Street Brewery. Oh, and Independence Brew Pub. If the weather’s nice, you can even bicycle easily between them all: there was a binge’n'bike race not too long ago that hit all four in sequence — I don’t think anyone fell down.

Actually, I hardly remember the hangover at all. I think the excellent art and the Light Syndicate overshadowed. Although, I didn’t get but four or five miles away from the coast at Prestatyn the next day. But it was beautiful nonetheless.

But jokes aside, thanks for having me Adam. It was a great trip, and I had a splendid time. I hope I can do it again soon. (Well, minus the bit where the welsh barman in Chepstow got me so pissed I missed my return flight. I’ll plan in an extra day for drinking next time I’m in Wales, it’s apparently necessary.)

Barmen in Chepstow are actually required to do that by law – It’s how we actually control immigration.

      Any time, Roo.

So that explains it! Way better than building a wall…

    Roo comic! Yay!

Nothing else of substance to add here other than hoping that I make it in that direction sometime. Though you don’t have to show me around Manchester.

That’s my kind of vacation. Seriously, i meet up with some friends once or twice a year (ex. New York City, Chicago) and people ask me what i did… ate and drank… a LOT. Yeah i saw the statue of liberty, but only from the Brooklyn bridge on my way to get some pizza after hitting up a couple bars.

“Yeah I saw the statue of liberty, but only from the Brooklyn bridge on my way to get some pizza”

Ha. From what I hear, the pizza there is more of an attraction than the statue any day…

Adam, if I do meet you at Comic Expo next month, remind me to keep you away from the pub. And for that matter, the alcohol shop and the hotel with the bar. And all the nerds.

I’m so annoyed I missed Roo being England, although I did chat to him on the phone for long enough to TOTALLY mess with my parent’s heads. :) Good times, good times.

The alcohol I can avoid… Actually I’m not a particularly big drinker, being the sort of drunk that normally falls asleep. It just happened that Manchester demanded it.

The nerds however, I’m not sure you can avoid them at the expo… it’s like their spiritual home.

And it would be a terrible shame to have you sleeping through the expo. When is this… should I try to come, if I’m between jobs at that point (which is looking increasingly likely to happen soon)?

Plus, Adam, there’s the problem of me being a nerd as well. How could you avoid me? you couldn’t, mwahahaha.

Roo, it’s the 9th and 10th of May. I intend to go on the 10th, since I’ll be in school on the Friday, which figures, really. You totally should come. Some of my mates should be there too.

Oh, that might be a bit last minute for a hop across the pond. Adam, you should come to a convention on this side some time.

I got the dates wrong too. The 9th is the Saturday, which is when I intend to attend.

I could swear I’ve already commented on this…

Anyway, this comic makes me proud to be British. :D

Yes you do lol. Adam you forgot to mention that you always found two lunatics in manchester. xD

    1. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 29.04.2009 at 18:21 (Reply)

But which two lunatics? The lovely Irish girls? Or Grim the Scottsman? Or… I’m sure there were more, but I was a bit fuzzy at that point.

  7. McClackers Identicon Icon McClackers on 29.04.2009 at 18:27 (Reply)

The two lovely Irish girls of course xD, so when do you plan a trip over again? Maybe you’s should all come over here to Ireland xD although don’t set any high expectations

    1. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 29.04.2009 at 18:29 (Reply)

You have beer in Ireland, right? That’s the only expectation I have. >_-

  8. McClackers Identicon Icon McClackers on 29.04.2009 at 18:30 (Reply)

Yup, we have lots of it, we’re known for being drunks are we not?

    1. Roo Identicon Icon Roo on 29.04.2009 at 18:36 (Reply)

(That was meant to be sarcastic, sorry.) I’ll let you know when I’m in the UK next, don’t worry. If things go one way, I might even end up there for a bit of time, eventually.

  9. McClackers Identicon Icon McClackers on 29.04.2009 at 19:16 (Reply)

No need to be sorry for sarcasm lol, honestly it’s cool. Awesome, just let me know xD
