All exhale the geek
Medication and animation,,,
Well, it’s been a long time coming, and I know some of you have been holding your breath (see, tangential link to the comic), but I’ve finally managed to get the first Flowfield Unity animation sorted.
Tada!
I think it’s pretty close to the original strip and it certainly looks like my drawings… I’m taking that as a good thing for now. They are what I’m calling ‘micromations’ – very short animations, less than a minute in length. They’re good for those of us with attention deficits.
I’ve also got several more waiting in the wings, made from a few of my favourite strips. I’m hoping to release them over the next few weeks.
Thank you to all of you that have already responded and rated the animation on youtube… you’ve been very kind, and as always, that sort of feedback goes a long way in encouraging me to make more of them.
If you have any favourite strips that you’d like to see feel free to let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
In the meantime, breathe easy my geek brethren.

i think that the ‘things progress’ comic from sept 7, 08 could make a cool animation.
Good call… I think I could do that.
I’d probably have to add a step in there… small tree, big tree, tree stump, cabin?
or maybe a quick flurry of people and dust that leave a cabin in its wake.
Taking a look back through the archives, x versus y was always a favorite.

Funny you should mention that too… This one is being converted into a long-form animation, codenamed ‘big dumb monster’ right now… I’ve been working on it for a while, but it’s slow going…
It’s a homage to my favourite giant monster movies.
Thinking about it some more… I might do it as a Flowfield short too… it will be fun…
Lovely animation. The music goes very well with it. And I love how you tied so many breathing-related things together in today’s post. Perhaps the cigarette and the asthma inhaler can be a duo of antithetical animations, one trying to take our breath away, one trying to give it back…

Thanks,
I do like themes… although when you think about it everything is themed by its very nature of existing.
Try it… pick two distinct things and lets see if we can link them in just one step…
Woah! that was a cool animation! Yeah, I agree. The music goes really well with it
I like to take my time matching up the images to the music… That said, similar to the comment I just made about themes, music tends to match up to almost any moving images.
One of my favourite pass-times is to put on the 24-hour news channel, (BBC News 24), turn off the sound and put my mp3 player on random. Most of the time the images and music synchronise, albeit in often surreal compositions.
Ventolin sounds more like musical instrument air con to me.
/b
Wow, the Ventolin orchestra sounds like something I want to be a part of!
looks cool to me fella – and the music is excellent; goes together like beans and (well done) toast, or goats and cheese – you know, all those wonder, wonderful things. And balls and scratching/s. Shit, it goes well together like a whole heap of things! So whats for supper?
Best, Sean.

Hmmm, I have to say I didn’t like the music. To me your comics always convey a sense of silence, of deadpan-ness. The jangly music was jarring.

I agree that the comic work ‘always convey a sense of silence, of deadpan-ness.’ Not much music comes to mind when I look at the images, thats for sure.
With the animation though, I think it works. I like the difference between the style of illustration and the music – and the animation is quite quick – the music works for this reason also. Each rubs of against the other. And jangly music is good for the soul.

I like it a lot! I’ve subscribed to your channel (I’m Sthemingway on YT) and commented on the video.

Very effective. I like your drawing/animation style..
I love how you make the things, I hope look something else soon. Congratulations

another awesome short.. and you always managed to pair your work with great music, love it.. funny what the short’s theme is about, a friend once joked about what he wanted done with his body when he died, he said he didn’t want to be buried six feet under, he didn’t want to be cremated, he wanted to be marinated…
